Earth Day: 7 small changes for a greener lifestyle

Earth Day is a poignant reminder of the importance of environmental consciousness in our daily lives. While global initiatives and policies play a significant role in preserving our planet, individual actions can also make a substantial difference.

From altering shopping habits to rethinking lifestyle choices, each person has the power to contribute positively to the environment. In this blog post, we'll explore practical steps that anyone can take to become a more eco-conscious consumer and protect our beloved planet.

1. Clear the air: quit smoking

One of the most impactful changes an individual can make is to quit smoking. Not only does quitting smoking benefit personal health, but it also plays a crucial role in reducing air pollution. Tobacco smoke contains harmful chemicals that contribute to air pollution and pose serious health risks to both smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke.

In addition to traditional cigarettes, it's essential to consider the environmental impact of vaping. While often marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, vapes generate waste that is harmful for the environment. By eliminating smoking and vaping habits, individuals not only improve their own health but also contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment for everyone.

2. Reduce your carbon footprint: choose public transport, cycle and train travel

Consider the environmental impact of your daily commute and holiday travel. Opting for public transportation whenever possible reduces carbon emissions and congestion on roads. By choosing buses, trains, or carpooling, individuals can significantly decrease their carbon footprint. You can also cycle to work if you live close enough to your office.

When planning holiday travel, consider alternatives to flying, such as train journeys. Trains are a more eco-friendly mode of transportation, emitting fewer greenhouse gases compared to airplanes. Not only does train travel offer scenic routes and a more relaxed travel experience, but it also contributes to reducing air travel's environmental impact.

3. Adopt good shopping habits: opt for recycled and plastic-free packaging

Choosing products with minimal or recyclable packaging can greatly reduce waste. Opting for recycled toilet paper packaged in paper is a simple yet effective choice. Additionally, selecting paper or cardboard packaging over plastic at the supermarket, whenever possible, helps diminish plastic pollution. Embracing eco-friendly options for everyday items like detergents and personal care products further minimises environmental impact.

4. Conscious consumption: choose loose produce and reusable containers

When grocery shopping, opt for loose fruits and vegetables that can be placed in paper bags instead of plastic packaging. This not only reduces plastic waste but also encourages a more mindful approach to food consumption. Buying in bulk for household products like detergents reduces single-use plastic usage and saves money in the long run.

It's also worth investing in reusable containers for travel-sized items, especially if you're a frequent traveller. From shampoos to shower gel it's better to buy the biggest size available, as this means less plastic is being used and it becomes cheaper, as it lasts longer.

5. Reusable essentials: carry eco-friendly items on-the-go

Make it a habit to carry reusable essentials such as a coffee cup and a fabric shopping bag, that you can easily fold and keep in your bag. Using a reusable coffee cup not only reduces waste from disposable cups but also encourages coffee shops to adopt sustainable practices. Similarly, bringing along a fabric bag for groceries minimises the need for single-use plastic bags, promoting a greener lifestyle.

6. Recycling: know how to do it properly at home

Effective recycling starts at home. Ensure all recyclable materials are thoroughly washed and sorted according to local guidelines. Familiarise yourself with the symbols on recycling labels to correctly identify recyclable items. By practicing proper recycling habits, you can reduce landfill waste and conserve valuable resources.

7. Spring clean your wardrobe twice a year for greener lifestyle

Take a sustainable approach to fashion by conducting a thorough spring cleaning of your wardrobe twice a year, at the beginning of spring and autumn. Donate, swap, or sell clothing items that you no longer wear or love. Join our upcoming Eco Stylish event to buy pre-loved fashion and you can also become a guest member just for the day to be able to swap your own clothes. Learn more about Eco Stylish membership.

Don't forget our events are all about learning and networking, so there's always an interview with a talented fashion industry insider. You can meet other people who are also passionate about fashion. We will welcome Yega, a well-established fashion illustrator, who will tell us more about her journey. As we celebrate Earth Day, let us remember that our everyday actions shape the future of our planet. By making small changes to our lifestyle and consumption habits, we can collectively work towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly world. Whether it's choosing recycled products, reducing single-use plastics, or embracing sustainable fashion, every choice matters. Let's commit to being guardians of the Earth, not just on Earth Day, but every day.

Remember, the journey towards a greener lifestyle is ongoing. Join the movement, embrace sustainable choices, and inspire others to do the same. Together, we can make a difference for our planet and future generations to come.
